Once upon a time, before I was a blogger, I worked in a bank.

*Gasp!*

“A banker! Evil walks among us”, I hear you all cry! Yes, that’s true, I’m evil but not because I worked in a bank. But that is a story for another time. All you need to know is I have some hints and tips about dealing with banks that might be of interest to you.

1. The staff have no control over anything

Thanks to theft, fraud, money laundering and a whole list of crazy things that can happen to money, the staff have little to no control over anything. The safe is on a timelock, everything is monitored. Credit checks are done by a computer and very little is approved manually. In the off chance that something has to be done manually, it will not be done by the counter staff or the manager. To bypass those automatic systems, someone higher up the food chain has to do it.

2. The staff kind of don’t care

I’ll be honest, there was many a day in the bank that I felt like smashing my face through my desk. People cry because they missed a payment on a credit card, people scream because you won’t approve a loan. People get very emotional when it comes to money, and I don’t blame them. But the problem is, because staff have very little control, they tend not to care. Don’t take it personally, this is a coping mechanism to help deal with people who like to scream and threaten disembowelment for not getting a better rate.

3. Being nice can get you far

I just want you to keep in mind those first two points. The staff have very little control over what happens, but you can decide how you react to it. If you have missed payments, and are honest with a member of staff why, there is a good chance they can point you in the right direction for help. I’m not saying that nice people get preference treatment but the people who scream and shout will be out the door as quickly as the staff can get them. Would you want to give someone a cracking deal on their credit card after they had called you everything under the sun? No, of course not!

4. We don’t do advice

Unless you are talking to a financial advisor in the bank, you will not get advice. The guy behind the counter can not give you advice on your savings, so don’t ask. He can tell you if there is a better rate available or give you the information about any offers that are coming up, but don’t mistake this as advice. The best that an ordinary member of staff can do for you is to provide you with information so that you can make an informed choice. If you aren’t sure about what is best for your needs, book an appointment to speak to an advisor who can go through your accounts and give you advice on what to do.
